The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is providing a loan of US$ 207 million to Enerjisa Enerji, Türkiye’s leading electricity distribution company, to support the modernisation and expansion of its distribution networks across the Baskent, Ayedas and Toroslar regions.
This investment comes at a time when Türkiye is accelerating its energy transition and expanding renewable energy capacity.
As electricity demand continues to grow and more renewable energy capacity is integrated into the grid, resilient and efficient distribution networks are essential to ensure a secure and reliable supply of electricity across the country. And as Enerjisa Enerji serves about a quarter of Türkiye’s population, the company plays a key role in this development.
The project will contribute to Türkiye’s green transition by reducing distribution losses, resulting in energy savings and lower carbon emissions. It will also enhance the company’s operational resilience through technical cooperation support, addressing emerging risks associated with the increasing digitalisation of the network.
The project will also benefit from a financial guarantee under the European Fund for Sustainable Development Plus (EFSD+) Hi-Bar Programme of the European Union. The guarantee will help accelerate investment in critical electricity infrastructure. The transaction represents the first electricity distribution project supported under the EFSD+ Hi-Bar Guarantee Programme and the first EFSD+ backed SIG project signed in Türkiye.
Sule Kilic, Director, Energy Eurasia at the EBRD, said: “As Türkiye advances its energy transition, strengthening electricity networks is becoming increasingly important. Through our longstanding partnership with Enerjisa Enerji, we are supporting investments that will modernise and expand network capacity, improve service quality for millions of consumers and help ensure that the benefits of the energy transition are delivered across the country.”
Enerjisa Enerji Chief Financial Officer, Philipp Ulbrich, commented: “This financing reflects our strategy of long-term and diversified fundinge are pleased to further advance our longstanding cooperation with the EBRD. It is also particularly valuable to us that this financing is supported by a guarantee from the European Union’s European Fund for Sustainable Development Plus (EFSD+. With the support of strong international partners such as the EBRD and the European Union, we will continue with determination to pursue our long-term investments that support Türkiye’s energy transition while maintaining our financial stability.”
The project also strengthens Enerjisa Enerji’s efforts to promote gender inclusion in the energy sector. The company will continue to implement its policies and practices to increase access to employment in the traditionally male-dominated energy sector, while exploring opportunities to further support employees with caregiving responsibilities and strengthen workplace inclusion.
The EBRD is one of Türkiye’s key investors, with more than €25 billion invested in the country so far, largely in the private sector.
