Building resilient and competitive economies by unlocking human potential
The promotion of gender equality and human capital development is an integral part of the EBRD’s commitment to fostering sustainable and resilient market economies through its investment, policy engagement and technical support initiatives.
Sustainable and resilient market economies rely on all people being able to contribute and thrive. Yet, across the EBRD regions, many individuals continue to face barriers that limit their access to skills, jobs, finance, infrastructure and essential services. These barriers constrict economic growth, reduce productivity and weaken resilience.
The EBRD promotes gender equality and human capital development as key drivers of competitive, inclusive and sustainable market economies. It expands economic opportunities and strengthens the foundations for long-term growth through investment, financing, policy dialogue, institutional reform, technical cooperation and advisory services. The Bank’s efforts in this area involve close cooperation with governments, businesses, financial institutions, training providers and civil society, helping to build stronger workforces, more inclusive markets and greater economic resilience across its regions of operation.
Our work focuses on helping people to develop and use their skills, participate fully in economic life and access the resources they need to build productive livelihoods. We support women and other underserved groups, including young people, older workers, people with disabilities, refugees, internally displaced people, veterans and those living in remote or otherwise underserved areas.
Gender Equality and Human Capital Strategy 2026-30
Sustainable and resilient market economies rely on all people being able to contribute and thrive. Achieving this requires the dismantling of barriers and the creation of a level playing field so every individual can achieve their full potential. With this imperative in mind, the EBRD’s Strategic and Capital Framework (SCF) reaffirms the promotion of human capital and equality of opportunity for all as a core strategic objective for 2026-30.
