The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is lending up to PLN 400 million (€92 million equivalent) to Tele-Fonika Kable, a leading European producer of power cables, to support the expansion of its medium and high voltage cable manufacturing and related research and development in Poland. The loan is being provided as part of a PLN 2.36 billion financing package with a consortium of banks.
Tele-Fonika Kable will primarily use the loan to expand production at its Bydgoszcz facility and to develop new laboratory and testing capabilities at the site. This will help strengthen Poland’s domestic manufacturing capacity for equipment that is critical to the modernisation of electricity transmission and distribution networks as well as the integration of renewable energy. Investments in medium and high voltage cables are also essential to improve Poland’s energy security, as the rapid deployment of renewables in the country requires significant upgrades to grid infrastructure.
Andreea Moraru, EBRD Managing Director for central Europe and the Baltic states, said: “This investment directly supports the Bank’s two key priorities in Poland: strengthening energy security and boosting the competitiveness of its vibrant companies. We will continue to back leading firms such as Tele-Fonika Kable as they grow, innovate and contribute to a greener energy system.”
Frederic Lucenet, EBRD Head of Manufacturing and Services, said: “We are delighted to again support Tele-Fonika Kable as it embarks on its next growth phase and to help strengthen the long-term competitiveness of Poland’s manufacturing base. Grid capacity is a key constraint in the transition to renewable energy. In this context and beyond Poland, Tele-Fonika Kable plays an important role in supporting the modernisation of Europe’s electricity grids.
Bartłomiej Zgryzek, Vice President of Tele-Fonika Kable’s management board, said: “The support of the EBRD and our banking partners enables us to accelerate strategic investments in manufacturing capacity and innovation. By expanding our facilities in Bydgoszcz, we are strengthening our ability to deliver advanced medium- and high-voltage cable solutions that are essential for modernising power grids, enhancing energy security and supporting the energy transition in Poland and beyond.”
Tele-Fonika Kable is one of the largest cable and wire manufacturers in central and eastern Europe, supplying more than 80 markets worldwide. The company has been an EBRD client since 2015 and has progressively shifted towards higher value products used in renewable energy and grid modernisation projects.
The EBRD is one of Poland’s key institutional investors, having invested more than €17 billion in the country since 1991 across hundreds of projects, largely in the private sector, with a strong focus on supporting the green transition, energy security and sustainable economic growth.
