EBRD and EU mark success of water conservation awareness campaign in Egypt

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the European Union (EU) have hosted the closing ceremony of a water conservation awareness campaign conducted as part of the Kitchener Drain Depollution Programme in Egypt.

The event took place at Kafr El Sheikh, bringing together senior representatives from the EBRD, the EU, national authorities and local stakeholders to celebrate the campaign's achievements and engage with participating communities.

The initiative reached around 2,000 students across the governorates of Kafr El Sheikh, Gharbeya and Dakahleya, promoting water conservation, efficient water use and sustainable environmental practices.

The campaign forms part of the broader Kitchener Drain Depollution Programme, a joint effort by the EBRD, the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the EU to improve environmental conditions and living standards for around 6 million people in the Nile Delta.

Commenting on the ceremony, Mark Davis, EBRD Managing Director for the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean said: “We are delighted to partner with the European Union and our Egyptian counterparts to promote more sustainable water use across the Nile Delta. Through the Kitchener Drain Depollution Programme, we are combining investment in vital environmental infrastructure with community engagement and awareness-raising. By reaching around 2,000 students, this campaign is helping to build a culture of responsible water use and supporting the long-term sustainability of these investments.”

Our collaboration with the EBRD, the EIB and Egyptian partners address environmental issues in the Nile Delta, including more sustainable water use for over 6 million residents in three governorates Kafr El Sheikh, Gharbeya, and Dakahleya through the Kitchener Drain Depollution Programme. Through the full participation of local communities, and youth, especially students from all backgrounds, water conservation will be transformed from a technical issue into a shared obligation”

The programme included presentations on campaign outcomes, student-led performances, a showcase of interactive activities, followed by engagement with students and local communities.

Egypt is a founding member of the EBRD. Since 2012, the Bank has invested more than €14.6 billion in 227 projects across the country.
