The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is supporting access to finance for businesses in Tunisia by increasing the size of its existing risk-sharing facility with Attijari bank Tunisia from €20 million to €70 million. In addition, the EBRD is also providing a new US$ 10 million (€8.6 million) facility to support environmental, social and governance (ESG) investments by corporate clients. Investments that are eligible under that new facility will receive grants funded by the United Kingdom through the High-Impact Partnership on Climate Action (HIPCA).*
The expansion of the existing facility will enable Attijari bank Tunisia to provide more financing for companies across different sectors of the economy, supporting investment and private-sector development in Tunisia.
The additional US$ 10 million facility will support investments that help companies to improve their environmental and social performance. Eligible investments could include energy-efficiency upgrades, renewable-energy installations and waste-reduction technologies, as well as initiatives related to employee training, fair labour practices, risk management and gender equality.
To date, the EBRD and Attijari bank Tunisia have supported 25 projects through the existing risk-sharing facility, representing around TND 400 million (€118.0 million) in financing.
Through its Risk Sharing Facility, the EBRD shares risk with partner financial institutions, helping to mobilise financing for investments that contribute to economic growth, strengthen the private sector and expand access to finance.
Since the EBRD began operating in Tunisia, it has invested more than €3.1 billion in 97 projects across the country, with 66 per cent of that investment going to the private sector.
* HIPCA is a multi-donor partnership managed by the EBRD. Active donors include: Austria, Canada, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, TaiwanICDF, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
