Environmental & Social Risk Management eLearning Programme for Financial Intermediaries
This programme provides the latest developments and best practices in sustainable finance and explains how EBRD's E&S Risk Management Procedures can help Financial Intermediaries to better manage the risks related to E&S issues in their business activities, lending and investment portfolios. The programme consists of 13 Modules, case studies and a final assessment.

Module 1 – Overview and Introduction
This Module introduces you to the EBRD, sustainable finance and the role of Financial Institutions (FIs) in fostering environmental and social sustainability. Learn also about the impact of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) factors on lending and investment decision making.
Module 2 – Sustainable Finance Developments and Initiatives
This module presents the most important sustainable finance developments and initiatives, including amongst others the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the Sustainable Finance Framework of the European Union.
Module 3 – Increasing the FIs Environmental and Social Capacity
Learners are gaining knowledge on how to increase a Financial Institution’s environmental and social capacity, how to establish internal ESG pillars, a sustainability strategy, good governance and transparency and assess their environmental footprint and their social impact.
Module 4 – EBRD’s Environmental and Social Policy (ESP) and Performance Requirements (PRs)
This Module introduces you to the EBRD’s Environmental and Social Policy (ESP) and the ten Performance Requirements (PRs), with a specific focus on PRs 2, 4 and 9. It includes guidance, good practice notes, compliance documents and useful resources for implementing the PRs.
Module 5 – EBRD Environmental and Social Policies and Procedures
The EBRD’s E&S Risk Management Policies and Procedures are presented; guiding you through the process from E&S screening, assessment and risk categorisation to E&S due diligence, decision and control and monitoring. FIs will learn how they can build a robust Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS).
Module 6 – Environmental and Social Reporting
This Module presents how and what FIs report to the EBRD through the Annual E&S Report. It addresses how to report on the implementation of the ESMS, the E&S performance of FI’s portfolio (loans or investments) and introduces practices for ESG/sustainability reporting to other stakeholders.
Module 7 – Sustainable Finance Products
The most common sustainable finance products are presented in this Module; both capital markets instruments such as green and sustainability-linked bonds, and also lending products with ESG targets, such as green, and sustainability linked loans, based on internationally accepted principles and frameworks.
Module 8 – Micro, SME, Corporate Lending, and Project Finance
EBRD’s E&S Risk Management Procedures for Micro, SME and Corporate Lending and Project Finance are examined here, giving practical guidance to partner FIs on how to perform appropriate E&S due diligence based on the level of risk of their clients.
Module 9 – Active Equity Investments
This Module has been designed to address E&S Risk Management procedures to be undertaken by partnering Private Equity Funds for their investment portfolio during the pre-investment phase as well as during the monitoring of their portfolio and post-investment.
Module 10 – Mortgage Lending
Specific guidance on E&S risk management procedures for mortgage lending portfolios are presented here, with a focus on E&S risks in collateral received via commercial and residential mortgage applications.
Module 11 – Leasing
The objective of this Module is to present procedures on how to identify, assess, manage and mitigate E&S risks in leased assets and the level of E&S risk in both types of leases (i.e. finance and operating leases).
Module 12 – Insurance
E&S Risk Management Procedures for commercial insurance applications are presented in this Module, determined by the two main drivers of E&S risk in insurance, namely the E&S risk associated with the applicant’s business activities, and the type of insurance product.
Module 13 – Trade Finance
The E&S Risk Management Procedures for EBRD’s Trade Facilitation Programme (TFP) are outlined in this Module, presenting EBRD’s E&S requirements for TFP transactions and the due diligence process to be followed by Participating Banks (PBs) when considering applications for trade finance.
