Project Description

Georgia’s dairy sector is an important agricultural value chain, contributing to around half of the country’s animal husbandry output in value terms. The country has significant potential to strengthen and market origin-based food quality labels such Geographical Indications (GI) in the dairy sector. The Georgian Ministry of Agriculture committed to working with EBRD and FAO to define the best suited institutional arrangement for the evaluation, protection and promotion of GIs in the country. At the same time, local producers/processors of quality cheese products and retailers have expressed interest in working on the certification and marketing of pilot GI dairy products in Georgia.

In light of this, the EBRD will work with FAO on a TC project aimed at enhancing the sustainability of the Georgian dairy value chain through the development and enhanced protection of GIs in the country. This will be achieved through working with public authorities on strengthening Georgia’s institutional framework for GIs, and working with dairy companies on improving GI specification for pilot products, as well as enhancing control systems and marketing strategies. The TC will help consolidate the GI institutional framework, support the adoption of best practices on GIs, strengthen linkages between agribusinesses along the value chain, and enhance the marketing of quality dairy products, which will benefit both producers and consumers in Georgia.

Independent Project Accountability Mechanism (IPAM)

If efforts to address environmental, social or public disclosure concerns with the Client or the Bank are unsuccessful (e.g. through the Client’s Project-level grievance mechanism or through direct engagement with Bank management), individuals and organisations may seek to address their concerns through the EBRD’s Independent Project Accountability Mechanism (IPAM).

IPAM independently reviews Project issues that are believed to have caused (or to be likely to cause) harm. The purpose of the Mechanism is: to support dialogue between Project stakeholders to resolve environmental, social and public disclosure issues; to determine whether the Bank has complied with its Environmental and Social Policy or Project-specific provisions of its Access to Information Policy; and where applicable, to address any existing non-compliance with these policies, while preventing future non-compliance by the Bank.
