Matteo Colangeli

Matteo Colangeli is EBRD Managing Director for SME Finance and Development group and leads the Bank’s activities in support of small and medium-sized enterprises and start-ups across all the EBRD regions. The group delivers a broad range of financing products and advisory services to strengthen the competitiveness of SMEs and develop innovation ecosystems. 

Mr Colangeli joined the EBRD in 2005 at its London headquarters and held a range of positions across sector and country teams, with much of his career spent in resident offices in Kyiv, Sofia, Tirana and Belgrade. As sector banker, Mr Colangeli led a broad range of project finance, debt, and equity projects, serving also as nominee board director of EBRD investee companies. He was appointed to Head of Albania in 2016 and, over the following five years, drove substantial expansion and innovation in the Bank’s business in the country, doubling its portfolio of investments. In 2021, Mr Colangeli became Director and Regional Head of the Western Balkans, managing a growing team and business across six countries of operations.

Before joining the EBRD, Mr Colangeli worked in London, with roles in consulting, corporate banking, and debt capital markets. He is an Italian national and holds a Master’s degree from the London School of Economics.
