Climate adaptation and resilience

The EBRD operates in regions experiencing severe climate-related hazards – heatwaves, floods, droughts and wildfires. Climate adaptation and resilience is a key component of our delivery model, being embedded in the Bank’s investment activities and shaping its policy dialogue. We help our clients to (i) identify climate-related risks that will affect their operations, (ii) develop and implement strategies to facilitate climate adaptation, and (iii) invest in technologies that will improve their climate resilience. Our activities help to protect livelihoods and essential infrastructure and foster long-term economic competitiveness, ensuring that cities, businesses and communities can continue to thrive in a changing climate.

Adaptation activities are incorporated in the Bank’s operations through its Paris alignment commitment. For all our investments, we assess climate risks and ensure that they are addressed. We work with our clients to integrate climate adaptation and resilience into their lending and investment decisions. This systematic screening for adaptation elements through Paris alignment creates opportunities to scale up policy engagement and investment in climate adaptation.

In addition to ensuring that EBRD projects are adapted to expected future climate scenarios, the Bank supports the development and delivery of investments and policy actions whose primary purpose is to enable climate resilience across the economy. We collaborate with partner financial institutions to expand the use of climate adaptation technologies and solutions among small and medium-sized enterprises. Through the Green Cities programme, we help to improve the resilience of water and other infrastructure systems in cities, while promoting nature-based solutions to mitigate flooding and heat stress in urban areas. We support climate-resilient agriculture by investing in advanced farming techniques, water management, drought-resistant crops, protective infrastructure and digital solutions to help our clients build resilience to extreme weather events. We also use capital market instruments (including climate resilience bonds and adaptation-focused sustainability-linked loans) to enable private capital to flow towards investments that build climate resilience. Across all sectors, we help our clients to develop transition plans that identify and manage climate risks affecting their operations.
