The “knowledge economy” is a concept in economic development where innovation and access to information combine to drive productivity growth. New trends such as the Internet of Things and digitalisation are examples of key elements of the transition to such an economy. Building the fundamental pillars required to stimulate the development of a knowledge economy is therefore central to the achievement of long-term competitiveness. To measure this development process, the EBRD has constructed a Knowledge Economy Index spanning the economies where it invests and OECD comparators.
