The European trust crisis and the rise of populism

A new EBRD Working Paper (number 208)

February, 2018

By Yann Algan, Sergei Guriev, Elias Papaioannou and Evgenia Passari

The spectre of populism is haunting  Europe and the West, but what is driving this populism? In this paper we look at the implications of the Great Recession on voting for anti-establishment parties, as well as for general trust and political attitudes, using regional data across Europe. Our results imply that crisis-driven economic insecurity is a substantial driver of populism and political distrust.
