Protecting Erdenet from floods

Author: Volker Ahlemeyer

Investing in flood protection and water infrastructure is about protecting people’s homes and daily lives, while helping Erdenet prepare for a changing climate.

In Erdenet, Mongolia, heavier rainfall and flooding are putting homes, neighbourhoods and everyday life at risk.

With support from the European Union (EU) and donors to the Sustainable Infrastructure Fund, the EBRD is helping the city strengthen flood protection and improve its water infrastructure. Flood channels, retention basins and water network upgrades are helping Erdenet adapt to a changing climate and prepare for the future.

The Sustainable Infrastructure Fund’s active donors are Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Japan, South Korea, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the TaiwanBusiness–EBRD Technical Cooperation Fund and the United Kingdom.
