Upgrading North Macedonia’s rail network

Author: Bojana Vlajcic

We're connecting North Macedonia to its neighbours through sustainable rail.

With the support of the European Union, we are working with North Macedonia to transform its railway system into a greener, safer and more sustainable mode of transport. This effort is part of a broader regional push to modernise connectivity and strengthen links with neighbouring countries.

Through the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF), the EBRD is financing the construction of the eastern section of Rail Corridor VIII, a strategic line that will connect Skopje with the Bulgarian border. This important corridor will facilitate cross-border trade, improve mobility and contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions by shifting transport from roads to rail.

The first section of this landmark project has already been completed, marking a significant milestone. At the same time, construction and planning are advancing on the remaining sections with the support of international partners and strong local commitment. Once fully delivered, the project will provide almost 100 kilometres of modern railway infrastructure, representing the most substantial investment in North Macedonia’s rail sector in decades.
