Productivity growth slowed down in the 21st century as populations have been ageing fast, rising geopolitical tensions have been reshaping global trade and investment, industrial policy has seen a major renaissance while risks stemming from climate change and pollution have become clear. Emerging artificial intelligence technologies have boosted investment while their prospective impact on productivity is much debated. Against this backdrop, convergence of emerging market economies towards G7 income levels has slowed, although some emerging markets have been successful in locking in major gains in living standards.

Submissions are invited including (but not limited to) in the following areas:

  • Impact of globalization in the era of rising geopolitical tensions: Changing geography of global connections and finance
  • Advances in artificial intelligence: Impact on the global financial system and the allocation of resources in open economies
  • Impact of financial development, including cryptocurrencies on growth
  • Demographic trends, finance and growth
  • The growing role of China in the global financial system
  • Changes in economies’ comparative advantages over time: Determinants and policies

Contributions in other areas, including public health, the role of institutions, climate change and inequality, are welcome in particular where they emphasize angles related to international finance and monetary policy.

Professor Javier Miranda (Friedrich Schiller University Jena Head of the Research Group Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Productivity Growth; Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH) – Member of the Leibniz Association)
