The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is providing financing of up to US$ 15.4 million to Uzbekistan’s leading brewer, UzCarlsberg. The Bank’s third equity investment in the country since 2020 will help UzCarlsberg to expand its production capacity and increase the sustainability of the country’s food sector.
The proceeds will be used by UzCarlsberg – an EBRD client since 2022 – to build and put into operation a new brewing facility adjacent to its existing production site. It will also allow the company to acquire advanced brewing and bottling equipment and expand its warehouse.
The project will support UzCarlsberg’s investment programme by increasing the brewer’s production capacity and helping to achieve water and energy savings. .
The project will benefit from blended concessional finance of up to €200,000 provided under the EBRD’s Agrifood Nexus programme, financed by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety. This grant will help UzCarlsberg to purchase sustainable technologies and mitigate risks associated with implementing advanced climate adaptation technologies.
The EBRD has invested almost US$ 6.9 billion (€5.9 billion) in Uzbekistan to date across 208 projects, with most of the funds supporting private entrepreneurship. The country has been the leading recipient of EBRD funding in Central Asia for each of the past six years.
