Boosting agricultural resilience in Jordan

Author: Dima Hamdallah

Faced with growing water challenges, the Al Shara’a brothers turned to a more sustainable solution through the GEFF.

In Jordan's northern governorate of Irbid, the Al Shara’a brothers are working to make their farms more productive, efficient and resilient. For years, they relied on traditional irrigation methods and purchased water tanks to irrigate potatoes and other seasonal crops.

Seeking a more sustainable solution, they invested in a modern drip irrigation system through the EBRD’s Green Economy Financing Facility (GEFF).

The new system delivers water directly to plant roots, reducing waste and improving efficiency. As a result, the farm has reduced water consumption by 35 per cent, helping the family adapt to changing conditions while protecting one of Jordan's most valuable resources.

Supported by the EBRD, the European Union (EU) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF), GEFF is helping Jordanian farmers invest in green technologies that strengthen resilience, improve productivity and build a more sustainable future.
