Farming from space with NASA - the latest episode of Nature Unheard

Seen from space, our planet tells a story, of how it grows, feeds and sustains life on Earth.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has released the second episode of Nature Unheard, its podcast series exploring the powerful connection between people and planet, and the groundbreaking ideas shaping our environmental future.

The new episode, entitled “Farming from Space with NASA”, looks at how satellite data are transforming the way we grow food. Joining Rachael Barza, EBRD Lead for Climate Adaptation and Nature Finance, and Emma Bentley from the EBRD Communications team is Inbal Becker-Reshef, Program Director of NASA Harvest, NASA’s global food security and agriculture programme, and Managing Director of Microsoft’s AI For Good Lab.

From tracking wheat yields in war-torn Ukraine to helping farmers adapt to a changing climate, NASA Harvest uses Earth observation data to make agriculture more sustainable, transparent and resilient. The conversation explores how technology, when combined with on-the-ground expertise, can help bridge the gap between science and action, ensuring that decisions in the field are informed by insights from above.

The EBRD, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and NASA Harvest partnership combines policy expertise, investment, and satellite technology to strengthen global food security by promoting sustainable agrifood systems and leveraging Earth observation data for smarter farming decisions.

The episode also highlights the EBRD’s work to modernise and green agribusiness across its regions, from supporting innovative agritech startups to helping agribusinesses, such as Astarta in Ukraine, adopt smarter, data-driven solutions for food production and water efficiency. You can listen to Nature Unheard on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and YouTube.
