  • Capital city to address environmental challenges

Bishkek, the capital of the Kyrgyz Republic, launched the Green City Action Plan (GCAP) – a crucial tool to help the municipality set out its sustainable development vision and strategic objectives. The GCAP will be implemented in the context of the EBRD Green Cities programme, which the municipality joined in 2019. Among other things, it will help identify the actions and investments required to address high-priority environmental issues.

The plan will be developed by a team of international consultants in close cooperation with the city of Bishkek and the EBRD. It will be based on such factors as the quality of air, water and soil, climate change risks, transport infrastructure, building standards, industry, energy, and solid waste management.

The development of the action plan is funded by the government of Japan.

The GCAP was formally launched today by the Mayor of Bishkek City, Emilbek Abdykadyrov, EBRD Regional Head of the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan, Ayten Rustamova and Ambassador of Japan to the Kyrgyz Republic, Shigeki Maeda.  The event also brought together representatives from municipal technical departments and local key stakeholders including business associations, academia and civil society.
