1 December 2016. BBC Ukrainian has announced the shortlists for its Book of the Year (Книга року BBC - 2016) and Children’s Book of the Year (Дитяча Книга року BBC - 2016) awards which are presented in partnership with the Cultural Programme of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
This year’s BBC Ukrainian Book of the Year shortlist, selected by the awards judges from 14 publications, includes:
- “The river of oblivion” by Kapranov Brothers (“Забудь-річка” - Брати Капранови) – Kiev: Nora-Druk, 2016
- “Look into my dreams” by Maks Kidruk (“Зазирни у мої сни” - Макс Кідрук) – Kharkiv: Klub simeynogo dozvillya, 2016
- “Old women’s house” by Myroslav Layuk (“Баборня” - Мирослав Лаюк.) – Lviv: Vydavnytstvo Starogo Leva, 2016
- “Oblivion” by Tanya Malyarchuk (“Забуття” - Таня Малярчук) - Lviv: Vydavnytstvo Starogo Leva, 2016
- “Masha, or Post-Fasсism” by Yaroslav Melnyk (“Маша, або Постафашизм “ - Ярослав Мельник) - Lviv: Vydavnytstvo Starogo Leva, 2016
The BBC Ukrainian Children's Book of the Year 2016 shortlist, selected from 13 publications, includes:
- “Lazybones” by Yuriy Vуnnуchuk (“Лежень” - Юрій Винничук) – Kharkiv: Folio, 2016
- “Wind from under the sun” by Oksana Lushchevska (“Вітер з-під сонця” - Оксана Лущевська) – Kiev: Fontan kazok, 2016
- “Thirteen tales in the dark” by Halyna Tkachuk (“Тринадцять історій у темряві” - Галина Ткачук) – Kiev: Tempora, 2016
- “PLACEstory of one friendship” by Iryna Tsilyk (“МІСТОрія однієї дружби” - Ірина Цілик) - Lviv: Vydavnytstvo Starogo Leva, 2016
The winning titles in both categories will be announced at an awards ceremony at Radisson Blu Hotel (17-19 Bratska Street, Podil) in Kiev, at 16.00 local time on Friday, 9 December 2016.
The BBC Book of the Year awards are judged by:
- Vira Ageyeva, professor, Ukraine National University “Kiev-Mohyla Academy”
- Olga Gerasymiuk, journalist
- Andrei Kurkov, writer
- Svitlana Pyrkalo, EBRD Cultural Advisor
- Marta Shokalo, Desk Editor, BBC Ukrainian.
The winning author in each category will be awarded a Ukrainian hryvnya equivalent of £1,000. The publishers of the two winning books will have the right to use the logos of the BBC Ukrainian book awards on subsequent editions.
