BBC Book of the Year and BBC Children’s Book of the Year 2013 awards open for entries in Ukraine

Author: EBRD Press Office

BBC Ukrainian has launched its annual literary accolade rewarding the best works of fiction in the Ukrainian language – BBC Book of the Year and BBC Children’s Book of the Year - in partnership with the Cultural Programme of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

The selection process for the ninth BBC Ukrainian Book of the Year awards was announced at a round-table discussion “The Place of the Modern Ukrainian Literature on the Literary Map of the World” held by BBC Ukrainian in Lviv, Ukraine, during the annual Lviv International Book Fair and Literature Festival.

BBC Ukrainian Editor, Nina Kuryata, comments: “BBC Ukrainian has always offered in-depth coverage of modern Ukrainian literature. We are proud that the Book of the Year awards have established themselves as a mark of high quality in the world of Ukrainian literature. I am looking forward to this year’s entries, hoping they will once again represent the best examples of contemporary fiction in Ukrainian language.”

Since last year, the awards have been presented in partnership with the Cultural Programme of the EBRD. EBRD Cultural Advisor, Svitlana Pyrkalo, comments: "The EBRD's cultural programme is proud to partner BBC Ukrainian to recognise the best in modern Ukrainian literature. Ukraine's young generation is thirsty for books; most writers and readers at the Lviv Book Fair are young. So we are especially pleased to be supporting the nomination, now in its second year, the BBC Children's Book of the Year."

The BBC Book of the Year awards will be judged by the following panel:

  • Vira Ageyeva, professor, Ukraine National University “Kiev-Mohyla Academy”
  • Taras Fedyuk, poet
  • Olga Gerasymiuk, journalist
  • Nina Kuryata, Editor, BBC Ukrainian
  • Svitlana Pyrkalo, writer, EBRD Cultural Advisor

The winning author in each category will be awarded a Ukrainian hryvnya equivalent of £1,000. The publishers of the two winning books will have the right to use the logos of the BBC Ukrainian book awards on subsequent editions.

Publishers can submit up to three books in each category, and up to two new books by previous winners. Submitted books must be works of fiction in the Ukrainian language, published within the last 12 months. For detailed terms and conditions, go to bbc.ua.

The long-lists in each category will be selected by the BBC Ukrainian team. The panel will select shortlists and winners.

The deadline for nominations is 1 October 2013. The winner will be announced in December 2013.
