The EBRD is backing work to ensure that the potential of the tourism sector is developed as much as possible - while remaining sustainable and energy efficient.
To unlock Jordan’s potential as a tourism destination the EBRD is supporting the Ayla Oasis project, regeneration plan in the city of Aqaba on the Red Sea.
The infrastructure of the hospitality, commercial and residential buildings at Ayla will be designed to use renewable energy produced on site.
The financing will contribute to the use of climate resilience solutions and techniques that will lead to significant energy and water savings as well as reducing carbon emissions which is particularly important given Jordan is in the group of most water scarce countries in the world and imports about 95% of its energy.
The project will also provide training for young people and women, transferring know-how to the local hospitality sector.
