Podcast - Nature Unheard: Making Nature Count

What if nature could speak? What would forests, rivers and coral reefs tell us about the state of our planet?

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has launched Nature Unheard, a new podcast series that takes listeners on a journey across the Bank’s regions and beyond – from Jordan to Kazakhstan, Kenya to the United Kingdom – uncovering stories of resilience, curiosity and groundbreaking ideas.

Hosted by Adonai Herrera-Martínez, EBRD Director of Environment and Sustainability, Rachael Barza, EBRD Lead for Climate Adaptation and Nature Finance, and Emma Bentley from the Communications team, each episode explores the big questions shaping our planet’s future: from the hidden economics of biodiversity to innovative ways artificial intelligence is being used to protect nature.

The first episode of Nature Unheard tackles a fundamental question: how do we make nature truly count?

Joining Adonai is Marco Lambertini, convener of the Nature Positive Initiative and former Director General of WWF International, and former BBC correspondent and science editor David Shukman. Together, they unpack the concept of “nature positive” – a measurable global goal to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030.

Marco shares powerful insights on putting an economic value on nature, the urgent need to shift financial incentives and the critical role of governments and development banks in driving systemic change. You can download this episode on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and YouTube.

The episode also spotlights an EBRD project in Jordan, an investment that is supported by active donors to the EBRD Southern and Eastern Mediterranean Multi-Donor AccountAustralia, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Spain, the TaiwanBusiness-EBRD Technical Cooperation Fund and the United Kingdom – as well as by the Blue Mediterranean Partnership (the European Union, France, Germany, Spain and Sweden).

Co-produced by Olga Aristeidou and Cecilia Calatrava.

This is a pivotal moment in humanity’s relationship with the planet, and an extraordinary opportunity to build a better future.
