The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is extremely concerned by reports of damage to the Chornobyl New Safe Confinement (NSC) caused by Russian drone strikes. The Bank strongly condemns all attacks on Ukraine’s nuclear infrastructure – particularly attacks on the Chornobyl nuclear power plant.
EBRD President Odile Renaud-Basso said: “Russian attacks on Chornobyl jeopardise decades of progress in making the site safe and secure. Not only are they reckless, but they could have dire consequences for people both inside and outside Ukraine. They must stop, and all parties ought to protect all of the progress we have achieved in addressing one of the world’s most dangerous nuclear disasters.
The EBRD remains steadfast in its support for the safety of one of the world’s most vulnerable nuclear facilities. We call on all of Ukraine’s partners to do the same and support repairs to the damage resulting from these actions.”
The EBRD has been at the forefront of remediation work at Chornobyl since 1995. The Bank has channelled more than €2.5 billion of international funds and contributed €715 million of its own resources in order to decommission the nuclear power plant, carry out the Shelter Implementation Plan (SIP) and make the area safe and secure. The Bank has also supported the development and implementation of a long-term national nuclear safety strategy for Ukraine.
The Bank remains in close contact with key partners and is assessing the situation on the ground. The Bank stands ready to support the Ukrainian government and international partners in order to ensure that Chornobyl remains an environmentally safe and secure site.
