  • EBRD lends €15 million to ECSO
  • Loan to support ECSO's capital expansion plans
  • Project to enable reduction in plastic waste input and improved waste-management practices

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is lending €15 million to ECSO, a leading Lithuanian producer of plastic granules that are made from 100-per-cent-recycled material.

ECSO – owned by Abris Capital Partners (Abris), a private equity investor and certified B Corporation specialising in environmental, social and governance transformation – produces pelletised low-density polyethylene (LDPE) granules from recycled industrial and household plastic waste. The granules are then used to produce products such as plastic packaging and bags.

The EBRD’s investment will support the company’s capital expansion plans, which are aimed at implementing new solutions, such as an automatic sorting centre for waste input, and the improvement of product-filtration, quality-control and water-filtration systems. These measures will lead to a more efficient production process and improve the quality of ECSO’s products.

The investment aligns with the EBRD’s Green Economy Transition approach and will enable ECSO to reduce plastic waste input and technological bottlenecks in its production process, as well as improve its waste-management practices.

ECSO has been owned by Abris since 2022. It benefits from the private equity firm's extensive experience in the recycling business in central Europe and the Baltic states and south-eastern Europe, as Abris also owns Green Group, a leading recycling firm with 11 production facilities in three countries (Lithuania, Romania and the Slovak Republic). Green Group offers a diverse base of recycling capabilities, including for polyethylene terephthalate (PET), waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), LDPE and glass, and provides industrial waste-management services.

The EBRD is a leading institutional investor in Lithuania. To date the Bank has invested more than €1.4 billion in 123 projects in the country, the majority of which has been in the private sector. Supporting the green economy transition and improving the competitiveness of the private sector are two key priorities of the EBRD’s work in Lithuania.
