EBRD secures sustainable operation of Tajikistan’s major airport

Author: Anton Usov

  • EBRD providing US$ 2 million loan to Khujand International Airport
  • Working capital loan to support business affected by the pandemic
  • Safety and sustainability of air traffic in Tajikistan

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is supporting Tajikistan’s key infrastructure with the provision of up to US$ 2 million in working capital to the country’s second largest airport Khujand International, which used to receive almost 600,000 passengers and 2,600 flights annually.

Following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, Khujand airport faced a 70 per cent decline in passenger traffic. The Bank’s financing will help it cope with the crisis impact and allow the airport to prepare for the eventual resumption of full-scale operations.

The EBRD’s intervention will ensure the sustainability and safety of Tajikistan’s infrastructure, which is important for the mountainous Central Asian state.

It is also the Bank’s second loan facility to Khujand International Airport following a loan to upgrade its aero-meteorological system provided in 2019 and aimed to improve flight safety in Tajikistan.

In response to the unprecedented global crisis the EBRD has adopted a Solidarity Package and now expects to dedicate the entirety of its business investments of up to €21 billion in the period 2020-21 to combat the economic impact of the coronavirus.

To date, the EBRD has invested €749 million through 136 projects in Tajikistan’s economy.
