Project description
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (“EBRD”, the “Bank”) is considering providing a sovereign-guaranteed loan of up to EUR 70 million to the Public Enterprise for State Roads (“PESR”) to finance the construction of a 10.7 km-long section running from Bukojchani to Kichevo, and will extend the existing Corridor VIII motorway in North Macedonia (the “Project”).
The Project will improve connectivity between the two neighbouring countries North Macedonia and Albania within the Western Balkans region and between the Western Balkans and the European Union (“EU”), facilitating international transport and trade in the region. Additionally, the Project will support North Macedonia’s recovery following the Covid-19 crisis, as the Project will facilitate outsourcing of road maintenance contract to the private sector. It will also introduce on-site training opportunities for a number of young people.
Given that this is an A category project, the Bank has engaged consultants which have critically reviewed the ESIA disclosure packages against the EBRD requirements for ESIA.
