Purpose of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessments

The EBRD is considering providing a senior loan to Gurmat Elektrik Uretim A.S. (“Gurmat Elektrik” or the “Company”) for the development of a greenfield 123.3MW geothermal power plant (GPP) located in the Aydin-Germencik province, 110 km south west of Izmir in Turkey. The Gürmat 2 Geothermal Power Plan will consist of four power generating units as well as the associated boreholes, pipelines and transmission lines.

Guris Holding (“Guris”) is a large, Turkish company with interests in the construction, energy generation, and industrial sectors (www.gurisholding.com). The Project will help Guris to expand its renewable energy portfolio and allow for the development of renewable energy in Turkey. The Gürmat 2 Geothermal Power Plant has been developed in line with Turkish legislation and an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has been completed as part of the local compliance process.

Gurmat has been operating an existing 47.4 MWe geothermal power plant (“Gürmat 1”) to the north east of Germencik since 2009. Although this is not part of the Project the ESIA has taken into consideration cumulative impacts and experience of preparing this plant to date.

There is a project summary document available for this project.
