Holger Wiefel has been appointed Head of Tajikistan for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). He will be based in the country’s capital, Dushanbe, and is due to take up his duties on 1 July 2023.
Mr. Wiefel said: “I would like to use my professional and regional experience to promote our core objectives in Tajikistan. These are the introduction of "green" technologies, digitalisation, better access to finance for SMEs, support of women entrepreneurs, greater climate resilience and upgrades of key infrastructure to name a few. This is a challenge I am really looking forward to.”
A German national, Mr. Wiefel joined the Bank in 2013 from small and medium-size enterprise (SME) lending specialists IPC GmbH and brought a wealth of professional experience from the Caucasus, China and Eastern Europe. He served as coordinator of the EBRD’s micro and small business lending programmes across a large region stretching from Ukraine to Central Asia. Most recently he worked as the Regional Head, SME Finance & Development Group, Central Asia and Mongolia.
Mr. Wiefel, a trained economist, holds MBA degrees from Mannheim Business School, Germany, and from Tongji University Shanghai, China.
To date, the EBRD has invested €892 million through 158 projects in Tajikistan’s economy.
