Building a sustainable private equity industry
We deploy capital across a range of strategies and fund sizes, with strong support for first-time teams. In doing so we encourage the development of a sustainable private equity ecosystem capable of meeting the financing requirements of private businesses of all sizes, throughout the business life-cycle. With our support, our partner funds add value to companies and generate a positive impact on wider society.
Strong governance & capital mobilisation
The EBRD supports the institutionalization of fund managers both at the fundraising stage, through our involvement in structuring fund proposals, and over the fund’s lifetime, through our work on advisory committees. This enhances the profile of fund offerings and helps attract institutional capital into our regions.
Supporting innovation
Our regions are home to many innovative companies with the potential to improve lives globally. By supporting the growth of the venture capital ecosystem, we aim to increase the reach of these companies while having the largest impact on the countries where these SMEs are based. Our support extends to more mature companies and traditional industries where our efforts focus on digitalisation, promoting technology transfers, boosting productivity, competitiveness and creating jobs.
Inclusivity & gender equality
To ensure the benefits of growth are shared equally, we work alongside our partner fund managers on inclusivity and equal opportunity measures, increasing economic opportunities to previously under-served social groups. Examples include improving women’s participation at board and managerial levels, or implementing recruitment best practices to avoid discrimination. We have found that positive inclusion practices can support companies with addressing key operational challenges, such as recruitment, positively impacting their bottom line.
The Green Economy
We guide fund managers in exercising their influence on companies to provide real impact on the environment through enhanced climate governance, implementation of energy and resource efficiency investments, and other measures. Because EBRD has been an impact and ESG-driven investor since it seeded our regions’ private equity industry in the early 1990s, ESG risk assessment and monitoring is already built into the DNA of many fund managers, making a focus on green investments a natural next step
