A different kind of power for Belarus
The city of Baranovichi in Belarus has gone ‘green’ by installing the country’s first wastewater treatment plant which turns organic waste into renewable energy.
Improved sewage management has resulted in substantial reduction in CO2 emissions, energy costs and a 10-fold decrease in the volume of sludge, which was a major contributor to ground pollution.
Creating biogas from wastewater by-products not only extracts value from materials previously seen as harmful to the environment. It is also a way to combat the scarcity of raw materials, improve the energy supply mix and promote the development of renewable energy use.
The plant’s substantial environmental and operational improvements would not have been possible without the support of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
