New green innovation vouchers awarded in Serbia

The EBRD-run scheme will provide €150,000 to small businesses for innovative green solutions in its Second Award Event.

New innovation vouchers for “green” solutions were awarded today in the Serbian capital, Belgrade.

This time 11 companies will receive a total of €150,000 under the Green Innovation Vouchers scheme, started by the EBRD, funded by Austria’s DRIVE (Delivering Resource Efficiency Investments) Programme and supported by Italy through the Central European Initiative.

The scheme aims to increase the innovation capacity of small and medium-sized enterprises in the field of green technologies and resource efficiency. Companies will work with local research and development institutions on project proposals. The maximum voucher amount is €20,000. The EBRD believes that such innovations will not only help Serbia better prepare for the changing climate, but will also support its long-term economic competitiveness.

The awarded projects cover various fields such as precision agriculture, waste management, energy conservation, renewables and eco-friendly products.

Among the awarder projects this time is DunavNet, in cooperation with the Institute of Food Technology, University of Novi Sad who are developing an IoT (internet of things) platform for grain storage management. The platform will incorporate models of various grains and silos as well as remote moisture and temperature sensors and based on all that suggest when, where and how much to dry and treat the stored grains. It will improve the quality of grains and at the same time conserve energy and minimise pesticide use.

Other projects aim at reusing waste materials such as waste Tetra Pak packages, making eco-friendly corrosion inhibitors and adhesives out of plant extracts and starch, or developing new solutions for increased use of renewable energy.

The award ceremony took place at the Hotel Radisson Blu Old Mill in the presence of the EBRD management including Alain Pilloux, Vice President for Banking; Charlotte Ruhe, Managing Director for Central and South Eastern Europe; and Zsuzsanna Hargitai, the new Director for Western Balkans based in Belgrade, who has just taken up her post.

The third call for applications will be open to companies from 11 June until 31 August 2018. SMEs and R&D service providers can apply through the web page http://inovacionivauceri.ebrd.rs.
