ERBD, European Commission and donors counter uranium mining legacy.
Uranium production in Central Asia in the Soviet era left water supplies and agricultural land at risk of contamination from an estimated 1 billion tons of toxic and radioactive waste.
This legacy represents a serious hazard to people and lifestock.
In 2015 the EBRD established a multi-donor environmental fund, which aims to protect people and environment by remediating the most dangerous sites. The European Union was the first organisation to contribute and has since been joined by Norway.
The affected Central Asian countries as well as the European Commission are now calling on additional stakeholders to attend a donors conference to contribute to the fund.
