The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has appointed Jürgen Rigterink as its next First Vice President.

He will take up his post in the spring of 2018 following the retirement of the current holder of the role, Phil Bennett.

As First Vice-President, Mr. Rigterink will lead the Bank’s Client Services Group, which includes responsibility for the EBRD’s banking operations, policy reform dialogue and partnerships.

Mr. Rigterink, who is a German national, is currently the Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Management Board of FMO, the Dutch Development Bank.

Before his time at FMO, he worked in the private sector at ABN AMRO where he ran the company’s activities in Kazakhstan and held a number of senior positions including Sector Head of Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa.

The President of the EBRD, Sir Suma Chakrabarti, said he welcomed the wealth of experience that Mr. Rigterink would bring. “Jürgen Rigterink has a very deep knowledge of both the development arena and commercial banking - a combination which will allow us to press our advantage in the way that we deliver project investment and support economic reform in our countries of operation.”

Mr. Rigterink said he was looking forward to joining the Bank, “I want to use my experience to ensure that the EBRD continues its very successful history of helping to build free market economies in its countries of operations. I believe that its investment firepower, matched by its policy expertise, can make a real difference to the lives of citizens in emerging economies.”
