Purpose of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessments
The EBRD is considering providing a senior long-term loan to finance the expansion and operation of the largest deep-container terminal in Gdańsk, Poland (“The Project”). The loan will be denominated in EUR, in the amount of up to EUR 75 million representing up to 25% of the total Project cost and that will be used primarily for the construction and operation of the Project.
The Project envisages the construction of the second terminal, which will add 1.0 million TEUs (“ twenty foot equivalent unit”) on top of the currently 1.5 million TEUs. The construction is expected to commence in second half of 2014 and to complete in 2016.
The Project’s transition impact stems from increased competition through the extension of the most competitive infrastructure gateway for inter-continental deep-sea container traffic to Poland and the region. The Project will not only increase the capacity for deep sea containers, but will also lead to extension of competitive transhipment market.
The Project will help to overcome capacity constraints, which will help to expand the client base of DCT.
Moreover the Project will contribute to the promotion of best practices in the sector as well as application of advanced energy efficiency solutions.
DCT operates the Poland’s largest and most modern container terminal. In 2004 the Company started the construction of the first deep water container terminal in Poland, which has a capacity of 1.5 million TEUs. The world’s largest container ship, the Maersk McKinney-Moller, began regular calls to DCT Gdansk in August 2013. As a result the terminal is now fully operational running at nearly full capacity, which lead to the decision to increase its handling facility.
