Meetings with government representatives and speech at Ost-Ausschuss

The President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Sir Suma Chakrabarti, visited Berlin on Thursday and Friday this week for meetings with government representatives and a speech at the Ost-Ausschuss der Deutschen Wirtschaft, a business association promoting German investments in eastern Europe.

Praising the strong cooperation between the EBRD and German businesses, the President said: “Germany is a leading investor in the regions where we operate and we are very keen to deepen and expand our joint efforts. Germany is a strong and important shareholder of our Bank, shaping our strategy and agenda with many important inputs, and it is our goal to translate this into business opportunities, for example in areas such as our Green Economy Transition approach.”

In Berlin the EBRD President met with Germany’s Minister of Finance, Wolfgang Schäuble; the State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Stephan Steinlein; and the State Secretary for Economic Cooperation and Development, Thomas Silberhorn. He also spoke at a dinner hosted by the new head of the Ost-Ausschuss, Wolfgang Büchele, about the cooperation between the EBRD and Germany and opportunities for German businesses.

In the meeting with Finance Minister Schäuble the President spoke about the Bank’s business delivery in 2016 so far, along with ways and challenges to maximise the Bank’s transition impact and the future cooperation of regional development banks in light of the recent World Bank/IMF Annual Meeting. The President thanked the German government for its contributions as a donor and presented the Bank’s refugee response package.

He said: "Germany is a key shareholder and partner of the Bank, and the German G-20 Presidency in 2017 will offer even greater opportunities for cooperation. We are looking forward as well to working with Germany to support refugees close to their home countries."

The President used the meeting with State Secretary Steinlein to review the challenges in various countries of operations and the meeting with State Secretary Silberhorn to discuss cooperation in addressing the refugee crisis.

The visit was President Chakrabarti’s seventh visit to Germany since his first election in 2012. He was accompanied by Acting Vice President, Policy and Partnerships, Alain Pilloux; Managing Director Hildegard Gacek; and Managing Director Hans Peter Lankes.
