#EBRDcountry – what makes your country special?

By Christopher  Booth

18 May 2016

As part of the run-up to the EBRD’s 25th Annual Meeting and Business Forum, we approached our followers on social media and asked them to contribute photos that illustrate the beauty and diversity of the lands where we operate. Several hundred took up the challenge.

While it’s customary to say that it’s difficult to choose the best, on this occasion we were truly spoiled for choice. The shots below are a very small selection from the engaging and talented entries we received. We hope you enjoy them, too.

Mongolian eagle huntress

Eagle hunters

A truly stunning documentary photograph of the traditional practice of eagle hunting, with a father teaching his daughter the art. This shot is from Mongolia, but hunting with birds of prey used to be common across Central Asia. © Batzaya Photography

Church of St Sava in Belgrade

Church of St Sava

The monumental church, located in the heart of Belgrade, is one of the largest Christian places of worship in the world, and is named after the founder of the Serbian Orthodox confession. ©Nikolina Bobic CoRD

Turkish capdoccia in snow

Cappadocia

The region of Cappadocia in central Turkey is well known to travellers and holiday makers – but perhaps not in the middle of winter. © @huzrudanismanlik

Eighty-two

We loved this picture from somewhere in the east of Turkey. A moment of highway code precision, or pure absurdity – we’ve never seen a speed limit sign like this before.  © @reportfromNL

Kamianets Podilsky castle

Kamianets-Podilsky

Poles, Lithuanians, Dacians, Franks, Mongols, Ukrainians, Jews, Armenians, Romanians, Turks …the list of nations and nationalities connected with the history of this impressive fortress in western Ukraine seems to have no end. © @diethy-lamide

Drilon

Among the most beautiful tourist locations in Albania, Drilon with its lakes, swans and willow trees is a big favourite with the locals, too. ©Ina Kosta @anduelan

Rooftop Yerevan

We really liked this surrealistic picture looking out over the rooftops of the Armenian capital Yerevan. It could be anywhere and nowhere, or deep in a dream. © @armenuhy_hovakimyan

Morocco's market

Market after dusk

You can almost smell the spices and sweetness in the warm evening air at this Moroccan market before nightfall. ©@sapnascribbles

Sighnaghi

A view from the fortified town of Sighnaghi, in Georgia’s eastern province Kakheti. The province is best known for agriculture and vineyards, most of which cover the vast Alazani valley you can see in this picture before the Caucasus mountains in the background. © @elenemel

Osh

There’s not much to say about this picture from the town of Osh in the Kyrgyz Republic. Apart from the fact that the happiness and carefree time it captures really appealed to us. © azatbarynbaev

To end, another picture showing the traditions of Mongolia – a family wrapped up in furs takes a winter ride on camelback. © Munkh Photography
