Project Description
The project aims to modernise steelmaking and casting facilities and the plate mill at the Makstil plant in Skopje, in order to restore integrated production capacity and to increase the plant's overall efficiency.
The project objectives are to:
(i) modernise and restore steelmaking and casting capacity at Makstil;
(ii) modernise the plate mill, in order to restore integrated production capacity for 300,000-400,000 tonnes per year and increase plant efficiency;
(iii) reinforce Makstil's market in the region and extend it to the USA and western Europe.
Transition Impact
This investment will be the largest made by an international strategic investor in FYR Macedonia. As the country has one of the lowest levels of FDI per capita in the region, the project will have a very important demonstration effect.
The Client
Makstil AD, a joint-stock company organised under the laws of FYR Macedonia. Makstil steel plant and plate mill will be the borrower of the project.
EBRD Finance
US$ 15 million (ECU 13.5 million) loan.
Project Cost
US$ 70 million (ECU 63 million).
Environmental Impact
Makstil's modernisation plans, and the proposed installation of continuous casting in particular, are likely to decrease dust emissions, which had exceeded national norms in the past. The modernisation will also significantly improve energy efficiency.
