Purpose of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessments
The EBRD is considering providing an up to USD 13 million (EUR 10 million) to the State Communal Enterprise “Koktem” (“Koktem” or the “Company”), a solid waste management company in the city of Aktau (the “City”), to finance construction of modern waste management facilities as part of the Waste Management Framework for Kazakhstan.
The current waste management practice was inherited from the Soviet era whereby most of the generated waste is disposed in an unsafe manner. The new integrated waste management facility will be designed using Best Available Techniques (BAT) and will fully process the waste with least or near-zero residuals. The system will include waste separation, recycling, anaerobic digestion and generation of electricity.
