
Portugal is a founding member of the EBRD and an important contributor to the Bank's work.
Since 1992, Portugal has contributed about €2.4 million in grants for technical cooperation projects in various countries of operations. Priority sectors include energy, municipal and environmental infrastructure and small business.

Portugal is an important source of foreign direct investment in the EBRD’s countries of operations. The value of joint Portugal-EBRD investment stood at €2 billion as of October 2022. EBRD finance accounted for €1.4 billion and Portuguese investment accounted for €0.60 billion.
The joint investment has been in Poland, followed by Romania and Hungary and broken down by industry, has been in financial institutions, sustainable infrastructure and industry, commerce and agribusiness.
11 Portuguese banks are also involved in the Trade Facilitation Programme (TFP), through which the EBRD guarantees the payment of trade finance instruments issued by banks in countries of operations to foreign confirming banks. Over 800 foreign confirming banks and bank branches participate in the Programme, 11 of which are Portuguese.
From 2015 to December 2021, entities from Portuguese firms won six contracts worth €36.5 million.
