
The Netherlands is a founding member of the EBRD and an important contributor to the Bank's work.
Since 1992, the Netherlands has contributed over €147 million bilaterally for technical cooperation and co-investment grants, guarantees and carbon credit funds.

The Netherlands has a long-standing dedicated bilateral donor fund at EBRD, focusing on the SEMED region and on supporting SME development, inclusion and combating climate change. It is a major contributor to multi-donor funds such as Northern Dimension Environmental Partnership (NDEP) the Early Transition Countries (ETC) Fund, the European Western Balkans Joint Fund, the Ukraine Stabilisation and Sustainable Growth and the SEMED Multi-Donor Account. The Netherlands was the first donor for the West Bank and Gaza Multi-Donor Account in 2018 (a contribution of €800,000). They contributed a further EUR 400,000 in 2021 so the total now would be EUR 1.2m.
Netherlands is one of the main sources of foreign direct investment in the EBRD’s countries of operations.
The value of joint Dutch - EBRD investment stood at €23.46 billion as of end of December 2020. EBRD finance accounted for €12.49 billion, and Dutch investment accounted for €10.96 billion.
The joint investment has been in regional projects, followed by Poland and Ukraine. Broken down by industry, joint investment has been the strongest in industry, commerce and agribusiness, sustainable infrastructure and financial institutions.
Netherlands-EBRD investment has been especially strong in Poland, followed by Ukraine and Turkey. Broken down by sector, Netherlands-EBRD investment has been in industry, commerce and agribusiness, energy and financial institutions.
Dutch banks are also involved in the Trade Facilitation Programme (TFP), through which the EBRD guarantees the payment of trade finance instruments issued by banks in the EBRD’s countries of operations to foreign confirming banks. Through the Programme, the EBRD has supported 494 export and import transactions of Dutch companies totalling €270.6 million. Over 800 foreign confirming banks and bank branches participate in the TFP, 14 of which are Dutch.
