Canada is a founding member of the EBRD and an important contributor to the EBRD's work.

The Government of Canada was an important donor to the EBRD, contributing a total of €42 million since 1992, though in recent years cooperation has slowed.   

Canada also participated in multi-donor initiatives such as Northern Dimension Environmental Partnerhship (NDEP) Nuclear Window,the Early Transition Countries (ETC) Fund and the European-Western Balkans Joint Fund.  Canada represents three of the four SEMED countries (Morocco, Jordan and Tunisia) and respective Board Directors at the Bank.

In 2022, Canada provided a €36.5 million unfunded guarantee to enable, together with other contributors, a €300 million EBRD loan to Naftogaz.

The value of joint  investment stood at €7.71 billion as of end of February 2023. EBRD finance accounted for €4.36 billion and Canada investment accounted for €3.35 billion.

The joint investment has been important across the EBRD’s region in various countries such as Mongolia, Romania, Türkiye and Ukraine. Broken down by industry, the joint investment has been in the following sectors: Industry, Commerce & Agribusiness, Sustainable Infrastructure and in Financial Institutions.

Canadian (seven) banks also participate in the Trade Facilitation Programme (TFP) as confirming banks. Since inception, the TFP has supported 63 export and import transactions for Canadian companies for a total € 55.00 million, for transactions which were initiated by banks in the EBRD countries of operation and confirmed by banks in both Canada and abroad.  

From 2018 to 2022, entities from Canada won 97 procurement and consultancy contracts worth €6.99 million.
