The EBRD is helping promote equal opportunities and best practice in HR for natural resources clients, Petrom.

In 2011 the EBRD completed its first gender pilot project focused on promoting equal opportunities and best HR policies and practices for a natural resources client, Petrom, in Romania and provided specific recommendations to improve equal opportunities within the company.

Gender consulting

The aim of the Bank’s specialist gender consultants was to identify areas where Petrom could improve opportunities in the workplace for both men and women. They focused on recruitment, mentoring and career management, and consulted with executives and employees at various levels within the company’s headquarters and at a Petrom refinery.

Petrom’s senior management is committed to promoting equal opportunities in its recruitment process and will be adopting many of the recommendations. With more than 20,000 employees, Petrom is the largest corporation in Romania and the largest gas and oil producer in eastern Europe. The project which was funded by the EBRD Shareholder Special Fund, was a very good pilot for understanding gender-related issues in a large corporation and could be repeated for other companies in the EBRD region.
