The EBRD collaborates with think tanks, research centres, universities and international financial institutions, both inside and outside the transition region.
The Bank of Finland’s Institute for Economies in Transition
The Bank of Finland’s Institute for Economies in Transition (BOFIT) specialises in high-level study of transition economics. Established in 1998, BOFIT monitors and analyses current economic developments and performs in-depth academic research emphasising applied macroeconomics. Its research covers structural transformation in two main countries of interest, Russia and China.
The Centre for Economic and Financial Research
The Centre for Economic and Financial Research (CEFIR) at the New Economic School in Russia is an independent economic policy think tank established in 2000. The EBRD and CEFIR have collaborated on the Life in Transition Survey and an extension to the Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey.
The Center for Strategic Research
The Center for Strategic Research (CSR) was established in 1999 with the mission to facilitate Russia’s economic development and to provide expert analysis and normative support on social and economic reforms. The EBRD and CSR have collaborated on a Russian trade conference.
The Center for Economic Research and Graduate Education
The Center for Economic Research and Graduate Education (CERGE-EI) is a joint workplace in the field of economics, associated with Charles University in Prague and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. CERGE was founded in 1991 as an American-style Ph.D. program in economics taught entirely in English. In 1992, the Economics Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (EI) was created as an economics research institution, seeking to carry out topical research of the highest international standards. The EBRD and CERGE-EI have collaborated on the Life in Transition Survey.
Chatham House
Chatham House is one of the world's leading organizations for the analysis of international issues. It is membership-based and aims to help individuals and organizations to be at the forefront of developments in an ever-changing and increasingly complex world. The EBRD and Chatham House have jointly organised a conference to mark the EBRD’s 15th anniversary.
The Foundation for the Advancement of Economics
The Foundation for the Advancement of Economics (FREN) is a recently-established research centre dedicated to advancing economic research in Serbia and other countries of south-eastern Europe. FREN's team of researchers and associates regularly and systematically monitors economic trends in Serbia, conducts in-depth research, and encourages and facilitates the exchange of information and availability of economic data.
The International Monetary Fund
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) was established to promote international monetary cooperation, exchange rate stability, and orderly exchange arrangements; to foster economic growth and high levels of employment; and to provide temporary financial assistance to countries to help ease balance of payments adjustment. The EBRD collaborates with the IMF on a corporate governance project. The IMF also regularly comments on the Transition Report and other publications.
The Kyiv Economics Institute
The Kyiv Economics Institute (KEI) aims to contribute to economic development in Ukraine by producing home-grown, top-quality research and policy analysis. KEI has attracted a core faculty of talented young Ukrainian economists who are returning to help build the institute as part of the foundation of Ukraine’s emerging economy, working on efficiency and productivity analysis, sequencing of reforms, labour economics, economic demography, and economics of aging.
London Business School Centre for New and Emerging Markets
The Centre for New and Emerging Markets (CNEM) was set up at London Business School in response to the growing importance of new and emerging markets from a business, public policy and research perspective. The centre aims to raise the quality of cross-disciplinary and policy-relevant research on new and emerging markets. The EBRD has had a close relationship with the centre for many years.
The Stockholm Institute of Transition Economics
Since its foundation in 1989, the Stockholm Institute of Transition Economics (SITE) has been a leading research and policy center on transition in Central and Eastern Europe. The EBRD’s Chief Economist Erik Berglöf was the director of the Institute until 2005. SITE and the EBRD jointly publish the academic journal Economics of Transition.
University of Michigan International Policy Center
The International Policy Center (IPC) is a new research centre at the University of Michigan. It serves as an intellectual focal point for international research and education by bringing together academics and produce innovative research on key issues related to government, non- governmental organisations and business policies in the increasingly global world. The broad areas of research interest include international trade and finance, international political economy, comparative economic development, and global health issues. The EBRD has collaborated with the IPC on the Transition Report 2005 and research on institutional development.
The Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies
The Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies (WIIW) is a think-tank specialising in studies of the region, with particular expertise in south-eastern Europe. The EBRD participates regularly in research programmes coordinated by the Vienna Institute, and collaborates on an informal basis with economists at the Institute.
The World Bank Group
The EBRD works closely with the World Bank Group, both on an operational and policy level. The two banks have jointly implemented several rounds of the Business Environment and Enterprise Performance Survey 1999, 2002, and 2005, as well as a comparator survey in developed market economies. The EBRD has also worked with the Foreign Investment Advisory Service to assess administrative barriers in a number of Russian regions, as well as in Kazakhstan and Georgia.
