Obstacles to business in Middle East and North Africa: instability, corruption, informal sector

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the World Bank (WB) are launching their joint report, “What’s holding back the private sector in MENA?  The event will take place in Cairo on 25 July.

The formal private sector in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) needs to play a critical role in the overall economic transformation of the region. Creating a conducive environment for the development of the private sector depends on a sound understanding of the performance of private firms, as well as the problems they face.

Based on the results of the MENA Enterprise Survey, which covered about 6,000 firms, the report provides a better understanding of factors that affect firms’ behaviour, dynamics and growth prospects.

The report addresses four issues at the heart of private sector development in the MENA region: the general business environment; firm finance and financial constraints; employment in the private sector; and competitiveness, with a focus on trade, innovation and management practices.

This event will bring together representatives of the relevant authorities and national institutions as well as participants from the private and financial sectors and is an opportunity to discuss the challenges and appropriate policy responses.

The first panel will include the presentation of the joint study and its conclusions. The second panel will focus on the report’s implications for Egypt and on steps for the MENA region with regard to strategies and priorities for future operations, along with a discussion of the operational strategies of the three institutions involved.
