The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative (We-Fi) are organising a Policy Webinar on “The role of inclusive policies: Does Covid-19 present a challenge or an opportunity for the economic empowerment of women?”.

The webinar aims to discuss the importance of promoting gender-responsive policies in Covid-19 economic recovery and facilitate an exchange of best practices.

Wendy Teleki, Head of the We-Fi Secretariat, will open the event. Pierre Heilbronn, EBRD’s Vice-President for Policy and Partnerships, and Norbert Mumba, Executive Deputy Director, Alliance for Financial Inclusion, will then deliver their speech. Barbara Rambousek, Director of the EBRD’s Gender & Economic Inclusion team, will moderate a panel discussion with representatives from the public and private sectors. The panellists will highlight key policy recommendations to ensure gender-sensitive investment and lending as part of the Covid-19 economic recovery response.

The coronavirus pandemic negatively affected the livelihoods of the entire population. However, women have been hit harder by the crisis due to their higher representation in sectors affected by the lockdown, higher participation in jobs with reduced security and higher share of caregiving responsibilities. If no action is taken, global GDP growth could be $1 trillion lower in 2030 compared to a situation in which Covid-19 had equally affected men and women (Madgavkar et. al, 2020). By contrast, ensuring that the Covid-19 economic recovery is gender sensitive could add $ 13 trillion to global GDP in 2030 (Madgavkar et. al, 2020). Policy makers and business leaders will have to consider gender equality in their Covid-19 responses to ensure bigger benefits for economic growth.
