On the event of International Women’s Day 2016, the EBRD invites you to a thought-provoking panel discussion, moderated by Jonathan Charles, to explore the critical role that enabling environments play in supporting women in the economy.

The lack of an enabling environment is probably one of the most significant barriers to achieving gender equality across countries and sectors.  While access to assets is critical in reversing many economic and social barriers that perpetuate inequality, more subtle and structural barriers remain and continue to perpetuate inequalities.  To achieve gender equality, formal and informal institutions, laws and policies need to allow women to access and control opportunities and assets on the same footing as men.

Our panellists are experts in pushing forward the agenda to address the barriers that exist to providing for an environment that is conducive to the promotion of gender equality.  They have direct experience in the corporate sector, policy and advocacy both globally and in our region, and will be discussing progress to date and the challenges that still lay ahead.

The EBRD, having recently launched its first ever Strategy for the Promotion of Gender Equality, has also placed this at the core of how it intends to promote business going forward.

This panel will provide the chance to involve colleagues and to discuss the latest thinking in the field and how the Bank can continue to strengthen its position.

We hope you can join us and look forward to welcoming you to this inspiring event.

The session will be opened by the Sir Suma Chakrabarti and will be followed by the panel discussion which includes the following leading specialists in their field:

Ms Tina Fordham, Managing Director, Chief Global Political Analyst, Citi

Ms Diane Perrons, Professor and Director, LSE Gender Institute

Ms Peninah Thomson OBE, Chief Executive, The Mentoring Foundation

A Drinks Reception will follow at 17:30 prior to the screening at 18:15 of the film “Suffragette”, with a brief introduction by the Director of the film, Ms Sarah Gavron (tbc).
