The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (the “EBRD”) would like to invite you to attend a Workshop on Corporate Governance in Turkish Family-Owned Businesses on Monday 11 November. The Workshop will be an all-day event, held at the Ciragan Kempinski Hotel in Istanbul. It is intended to be an inclusive event, aimed at primary shareholders and owners only. 

The Workshop will be led by the distinguished and highly respected international corporate governance specialist Haluk Alacaklıoğlu.
The Workshop will cover the following topics:

1.       How to establish good governance and succession plan in family business

2.       Board of Directors and corporate governance best practices in family businesses

3.       Good Financial Parenting for the 21st Century

4.       How to work successfully with professionals in a family business: Sustainable transition to professional management?

5.       Investments and Corporate Finance Alternatives for family businesses in changing economic circumstances

6.       Legal rights, responsibilities and risks of shareholdership in privately-owned enterprises

Dr. Haluk Alacaklioglu, Ph.D., President, Family Business Governance

Dr. Haluk Alacaklioglu is the founder of Family Business Governance, LLP, a UK- registered international advisory firm helping leading families in business achieve their goals. He has an undergraduate degree from Bosphorus University, Istanbul, and an MBA from Harvard Business School, Boston, with Honors. He completed his Ph.D. at AUL, London where his thesis and book on Family Enterprises & Corporate Governance were published.

Dr. Alacaklioglu advises family-owned enterprises worldwide on succession planning, governance, effective board formation, performance, family constitutions and strategic matters regarding shareholders. He speaks English, Turkish and German. He has lived in Turkey, Germany, USA, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, and has worked in over 30 countries.


Volkan Kara, Partner, Bain&Co

Volkan Kara has 25 years of industry and management consulting experience in the USA, Europe & Turkey, including extensive experience in M&A, corporate strategy, governance and operating models, growth and business development in family holdings, utility & energy markets, retail, cement, petrochemical  and industrial companies.

In addition to his role as Partner at the global management consultancy Bain & Co, Mr Kara is currently President of DEİK Outbound Investment Business Council.

Mr Kara has also held Board of Director and leadership positions at multiple Sabancı Holding companies, and is a former Director of Strategy and Business Development for Sabanci Holding and SABMiller USA

Mr Kara holds an HBS Executive Master of Business Program; Kenan-Flagler Business School, University of North Carolina (MBA); Istanbul Technical University (MEng.)


Joline Godfrey, Founder, Independent Means

Joline Godfrey has been an innovator in financial education for children and parents for over two decades. Ms Godfrey was a Kellogg Leadership Fellow and the recipient of the Leavey Award for Excellence, as well as the Beta Gamma Sigma Entrepreneurship Award. Mehmet Sami, Founding Partner, Pretium Kurumsal Danışmanlık A.Ş.

Mehmet Sami is the Founding Partner of Pretium Corporate Advisory in Istanbul, Turkey. Mr Sami has 30 years of experience in corporate finance and private equity advisory fields. His work in investment banks, a brokerage firm, the Big 4 corporate finance firms and his own boutique consulting firm has helped him establish a local and international client base and presence (New York, Dubai Offices), while undertaking various privatisation, cross-border M&A and large international joint ventures in Turkey. Since 2015, under his own firm, Mr Sami has been consulting foreign banks and multinationals on portfolio review & monitoring services, macro-micro risks and possible impacts, and on corporate finance alternatives.

Mr Sami initiated and founded Ata Invest’s Investment Banking, Research and Institutional Trading Division. Ata Invest became one of the largest independent firms in Turkey. After nearly 19 years at Ata Invest, Mr Sami moved to Deloitte Corporate Finance to become the Lead M&A and Debt Advisory Partner in 2012 and served on the Deloitte Global M&A ExCo.

As an independent Board Member, Mr Sami has restructured and set corporate governance standards in Turkish firms (both listed and private). Mr Sami has been a Board Member of Enerjisa Enerji (Sabanci Holding/E.ON JV), Akcansa Cement (Sabanci Holding/Heidelberg Cement JV) and Kordsa since May 2018, and serves as Chairman of some of their Corporate Governance, Audit and Early Risk Detection Committees.

Mr Sami has received a  B.A (Hons) in Economics from Kingston University, London and an M.Sc in Business Systems & Analysis from City University, London, UK.


Zeynep Ahu Sazcı Uzun, Partner, Hergüner-Bilge Law Office

Zeynep Ahu Sazcı Uzun is a Senior Associate in the transactional practice group of Hergüner Bilgen Özeke. Ms. Sazcı Uzun practices all aspects of corporate law and specializes in joint ventures, mergers and acquisitions, capital markets and corporate governance.

Ms Sazci Uzun holds a law degree from Istanbul Bilgi University (2008) and an LL.M degree from Harvard Law School (2012) concentrating on comparative corporate law and governance. She has been a member of the Istanbul Bar Association since 2009 and the New York State Bar Association since 2013. She is also a member of the Turkish Corporate Governance Association and Istanbul Internal Law Association (ILI).
