EBRD manages financing of project to safeguard Chernobyl site
Watch the ceremony to celebrate one of the world’s greatest engineering achievements, the securing of the site of the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear accident with the giant arch known as the ‘New Safe Confinement’.
The ceremony was streamed live on this page and is now available to view on demand.
The event, which attracted significant media attention, was attended by President Poroshenko of Ukraine, the international donor community, the EBRD and the Novarka construction consortium.
Big enough to house Notre Dame, longer than two 747 jumbo jets, the New Safe Confinement is the largest moveable land-based structure ever built. It will safeguard the radioactive reactor building and tonnes of nuclear fuel still inside for at least a century.
It is equipped with remotely controlled cranes and machinery to begin the task of dismantling the hastily built shelter erected after the 1986 disaster at the site.
The EBRD has managed the project’s financing and is the largest single donor to it.
