Project description
and objectives:

The EBRD is considering lending EUR 20 million to Serbia Broadband (“SBB”). The Bank’s funding, which would be part of a broader debt facility package, will finance potential future acquisitions of SBB allowing the company to consolidate its market share in Serbia and its neighbouring countries.

Transition impact:

The project is expected to bring transition through the following two sources:

  • Demonstration effect
SBB development of the first high quality, unified regional Direct To Home (“DTH”) Platform through a combination of organic development in Serbia, Bosnia, Slovenia and Montenegro as well as acquisitions will demonstrate to the market the viability of such a regional approach, along with the economies of scale that can be realised from this. In addition SBB is at the forefront of introducing broadband Internet to the Serbian market. Its success in this respect would provide a strong demonstration effect to the rest of the industry in Serbia.

  • Business practices
Through the Project SBB will be running newly acquired companies in the same way as its existing regional operations. Consequently it will be contributing managerial expertise and putting in place systems for improving the financial and operational management of the acquired businesses.

The client:

SBB is a major cable TV and DTH player in Serbia and the whole South Eastern Europe region. Its core cable TV operations are being complemented by DTH satellite TV services which extend to rural communities where quality cable TV networks are not economic. Launched in Serbia in 2006 its DTH operation has continued to expand in the Balkan region and today operates in Serbia, as well as Montenegro, Slovenia and Bosnia.

EBRD finance:

The Bank will provide a senior debt facility of EUR 20 million alongside parallel facilities consisting of additional senior debt and mezzanine facilities.

Total project cost:
