The project will finance the sponsor’s strategic expansion in central and eastern Europe. The EBRD would provide financing to support further expansion in Hungary and the development of new hypermarkets in Romania and Serbia and Montenegro.

Transition impact:
|
The project will support further development of the Hungarian retail market in more regional areas. In Romania and in Serbia and Montenegro, the project will give customers access to the hypermarket format which to date has been limited. The project is also expected to increase efficiency and competition in the market and lead to positive developments among the suppliers.

Total project cost for the three countries is approximately €320 million.

Environmental impact:
|
The project was screened B/0 requiring an analysis of the Company's corporate approach to environment, health and safety issues. Local environmental authorities are consulted prior to the construction of each new hypermarket and all hypermarkets conform to local environment, health and safety requirements and Louis Delhaize’s own standards which are based on French standards and best practice. The Company will be required to comply with relevant national and EU standards for environment, health and safety.
